Lifeguard, First Aid/, CPR/AED Certification

The lifeguard training course is an American Red Cross course offered to individuals with a desire to become a lifeguard. This course will give you the skills necessary to save a life! 

Please come prepared to learn and swim with a swim suit, towel, goggles, notebook, and a pen or pencil. Lifeguarding Fees include textbook, certificates, and pool access.

Blended Learning Format

Course Length: 19.5 hours

Lifeguard Re-Certification

This course offers certification through the American Red Cross in lifeguarding and first aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional. This program is open to those who have a current lifeguard training certificate.  

 

Blended Learning Format

Course Length: 10 hours

 

Lifeguard Instructor Course

This course is offered to those who wish to teach lifeguarding courses. It is only offered during the Spring semester through Recreation Management course RM 3222.

 

Water Front Module

About the Course:

  • The Water Front module, which is only valid with a current Lifeguarding Certificate, is designated to train pool lifeguards in working non-surf beaches.
  • You will be trained using mask and fins, searching shallow and deep water areas, and using a rescue board. Training will occur in both pool and classroom.
  • Upon successful completion of this course (including written and rescue skills testing), you will receive an American Red Cross Lifeguard Waterfront Training Certificate.
  • Spring 2025 Courses TBA.

Certified Pool Operator (PHTA)

This certification program is taught over a two-day period by a certified instructor to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary for pool and spa operations including:

  • Pool and spa chemistry testing,
  • Treatment,
  • Filtration,
  • Maintenance,
  • Automatic feeding equipment,
  • Government requirements

In classroom only. This course does not utilize the pool.

Water Safety Instructor Certification (WSITM)

Candidates will learn to teach courses and presentations in the Red Cross Swimming and Water Saftey Program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions,, and how to evaluate participants' progress.

Courses and Presentations Include:

  • Parent and Child Aquatics Levels 1 and 2
  • Preschool aquatics Levels 1-3
  • Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-6
  • Basic Water Rescue
  • Personal Water Safety
  • Three adults courses and more!

Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR/AED -

Blended Learning

This certification is offered to student employees, faculty, staff, students, and the community. This course is offered through the American Red Cross.

Blended Learning Format

Online Portion Length: 3.5 hours

In Person Course Length: 3 hours

Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR/AED -

Instructor

This course is for individuals who have completed the Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR/AED American Red Cross Course and who want to become and instructor for that course.
