Adverse Weather Guidelines – University Recreation Facilities & Programs

University Recreation will follow these guidelines as much as possible during adverse weather.  Worsening weather conditions may result in additional changes to the guidelines below, and facilities may open later/close earlier than outlined.  We regret the inconvenience caused by adverse weather. We have enacted these guidelines with a priority on student employee safety and the safety of the general Appalachian public. 

 

#1: CLASSES CANCELED/MOVED TO ONLINE during the AM (announcement from school at/after 6:00 a.m. but prior to 10:00 a.m.)

If classes are canceled OR moved online during the morning and the University is under Reduced Operations, all UREC facilities and programs will open on time and will try to remain open and operate as scheduled. If classes remain canceled or moved online for the entire day, UREC will proceed to closing and canceling programs as outlined in #3.

 

#2: CLASSES CANCELED/MOVED TO ONLINE during the AM (announcement from school at/before 5:00 a.m.)

If classes are canceled OR moved online during the morning and the University is under Reduced Operations, UREC will work to open the SRC at 8:00 a.m. and the Quinn Rec Center at 11:00 a.m.  If classes remain canceled or moved online for the entire day, UREC will proceed to closing and canceling programs as outlined in #3.

 

#3: CLASSES CANCELED/MOVED ONLINE during mid-day (after 10:50 a.m.)

If classes are canceled OR moved online and the University is under Reduced Operations, UREC will work to keep the SRC open until 8:00 p.m. (the pool and climbing wall would close at 7:00 p.m.) and the Quinn Rec Center would close at 7:00 p.m. All programs (such as Group fitness classes, Intramural & Club Sports activities, roll clinics, aquatics programs/swim lessons, group meetings, etc.) would be canceled.

 

#4: CLASSES CANCELED/MOVED ONLINE during the afternoon (after 2:45 p.m.)

If classes are canceled OR moved online during the afternoon (evening classes) and the University is under Reduced Operations, UREC will work to keep the SRC open until 8:00 p.m. (the pool and climbing wall would close at 7:00 p.m.) and the Quinn Rec Center would close at 7:00 p.m. All programs (such as Group fitness classes, Intramural & Club Sports activities, roll clinics, aquatics programs/swim lessons, group meetings, etc.) would be canceled.


#5: UNIVERSITY SUSPENDS OPERATIONS during the AM (prior to 5:00 a.m.)

If the University officially Suspends Operations prior to 5:00 a.m., UREC will work to open the SRC at 10:00 a.m. and remain open until 8:00 p.m. (the pool and climbing wall would close at 7:00 p.m.) and the Quinn Rec Center would be CLOSED. All programs (such as Group fitness classes, Intramural & Club Sports activities, roll clinics, aquatics programs/swim lessons, group meetings, etc.) would be canceled.

 

#6: UNIVERSITY SUSPENDS OPERATIONS mid-day (after 11:50 a.m.)

If the University officially Suspends Operations mid-day, UREC will work to keep the SRC open until 8:00 p.m. (the pool and climbing wall would close at 7:00 p.m.) and the Quinn Rec Center would close at 3:00 p.m. All programs (such as Group fitness classes, Intramural & Club Sports activities, roll clinics, aquatics programs/swim lessons, group meetings, etc.) would be canceled.

 

#7:  WEEKEND OPERATIONS

If the University is under Reduced Operations during Saturday or Sunday, UREC will work to keep facilities open on time and will try to remain open and operate as scheduled.

If the University is under Suspended Operations during Saturday or Sunday, UREC will work to keep the SRC open 12:00pm-6:00pm, and the Quinn Recreation Center and Mt. Mitchell Fitness Center would be closed.
