Climbing Wall Route Setter

 

Title: Route Setter
Reports To: Associate Director & Coordinator for Outdoor Programs
Hours:

As needed during certain weeks of the year. Setting typically occurs during semester breaks and on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.

Position Summary: Route Setters primary responsibility is to strip and set routes on the climbing wall to regularly provide a variety of climbing routes. Outdoor Programs strives to have a variety of climbing routes to welcome and challenge both beginners and advanced climbers: young and old. Route Setters should be able to climb and set a variety of top and boulder problems. Routine cleaning and disinfecting procedures will be conducted regularly. 

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • General maintenance of the facility including general organization and inspection of equipment, inventory, and cleaning.
  • Rate climbs based on the Vermin Scale (bouldering) and Yosemite Decimal System (top rope routes).
  • Ability to provide a belay and perform a rescue at all times.
  • Set up self-belay anchor system.
  • Set routes using appropriate nuts for the specific holds.
  • Clearly label and appropriately name routes with their rating and the setter.
  • Complete Near Miss/Incident Reports as necessary.
  • Contact a Facility Supervisor in a timely fashion for emergency situations.
  • Maintain a “big picture” perspective while setting specific routes.
  • Clean, organize, and sort climbing holds and the climbing cage.
  • Be able to complete tasks efficiently and without close supervision.
  • Adhere to safety and risk management policies and requests.
  • Deep cleaning of all equipment throughout shifts worked and especially at specified designated cleaning times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications include:

  • Demonstrate proper ascending technique.
  • Familiarity with the Vermin Scale and Yosemite Decimal System.
  • Ability to cleanly climb and set a variety of routes with a rating of 5.9 or V3 and greater.
  • Ability to properly put on a harness and tie a Figure 8 Follow Through.

Condition of Employment:

  • Attendance at Staff Training and Staff In-services.
  • Available to work up to seven days per week and have flexibility for morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts. Setting only occurs when the wall is closed to users and an appropriate supervisor is present.
  • Outdoor Programs staff should consider their positions with UREC as their first non-academic priority.
  • Ability to manage risks at the wall.
  • Route Setters must abide by all University Recreation policies and procedures on and off the clock.

Salary: $8.00 per hour
