Carter Firestarter Scholarship

Firestarters make a movement. Firestarters are creative, challenge the status quo and inspire others to grow. They are the start of something great. Barbara Daye, Dean of Students, emerita at Appalachian State University, wishes to honor Joe R. Carter, retired Director of University Recreation at Appalachian State University through awarding a scholarship in his honor.

As the leader for one of the largest student employers on campus, Mr. Carter believed it was important to provide an environment for students to gain and polish transferable work skills.  Part of his vision for University Recreation was to provide students with work experience and inspire diligence, relentless effort to do what is right, and satisfaction after a job well done.  In recognition of this vision, the Carter Firestarter Scholarship provides financial assistance to the most outstanding student employees within the department.

The award is for the amount of $500 and is awarded for each fall semester.
