What is Ascent?
Ascent is an outdoor orientation program designed for incoming freshmen beginning their journey at App State. The Ascent Program fosters meaningful connections and lasting friendships while exploring incredible outdoor locations around Boone and the surrounding high country. Ascent is a great way to learn from our knowledgeable staff, step out of your comfort zone, and provide an introduction to essential outdoor skills. Ascent offers a supportive experience to build confidence, develop community and create lasting memories.
Base Camp - $260
7/6-7/9, Monday-Thursday
- 7/6: Meet your trip leaders and fellow group members. Move in to Camp Broadstone and enjoy an afternoon teambuilding program.
- 7/7: Spend the morning learning and practicing essential campcraft skills, and then hit the trail on a hike to Price Lake for an afternoon of paddling.
- 7/8: Take the skills you have learned and implement them in the field for an overnight canoe trip on the New River.
- 7/9: Finish your canoe trip and drive back to Camp Broadstone to wrap up your Ascent experience
Wilderness Experience - $275
7/13-7/16, Monday-Thursday
- 7/13-7/16: Begin your adventure at App State with a backpacking trip through Mt Rogers high country and Grayson Highlands State Park. The trip will encompass 4 days of backpacking where you will camp out each night while learning essential backcountry skills and creating lasting connections and friendships.
