Outing Center Program Assistant

 

Title: Outing Center Program Assistant
Reports To:  Associate Director, Coordinator, & Graduate Assistant for Outdoor Programs,
Hours:

3-10 hours per week depending on fluctuating workload.

Position Summary: The Outing Center Program Assistant is responsible for assisting the GA for Outdoor Programs with daily management and planning of Outing Center operations. This includes, but is not limited to, the development and implementation of pre-semester and in-service trainings, recruiting, interviewing, supervising, and evaluating outing center staff members, maintaining rental gear, and other tasks as necessary to ensure smooth operation of the Outing Center. Routine cleaning and disinfecting procedures will be conducted regularly.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with recruiting efforts for Outing Center staff members including review of applications, interviews, and hiring decisions.
  • Assist with planning and facilitating Outing Center staff trainings (both pre-semester and in-service trainings).
  • Develop and manage the Outing Center schedule.
  • Manage the Outing Center Saturday schedule and send weekly Thursday email reminders to staff working on Saturdays. 
  • Work to help staff find shift coverage in certain circumstances.
  • Maintain excellent knowledge of all Outing Center procedures including the use of Fusion in order to help guide staff and troubleshoot when needed.
  • Monitor staff mastery of new Outing Center procedures and systems assessing any needs for additional training.
  • Assist with the supervision, discipline, and evaluation of Outing Center staff members. 
  • Monitor disinfecting procedures for all gear at the outing center and ensure organization of gear storage areas including the back bay.
  • Keep detailed records of gear inventory - noting broken, damaged, or lost gear. 
  • Repair rental gear in a timely manner to keep gear in circulation.
  • Take full inventory of rental gear at the end of each semester.
  • Prepare gear for Recreation Management and PE classes as needed.
  • Maintain timely and clear communication (both oral and written) with Outing Center staff and supervisors.
  • Know, adhere to, and enforce policies and procedures in order to manage risks and maintain quality of service.
  • Maintain knowledge of Outdoor Program events and programs as well as a basic knowledge of UREC with an ability to effectively communicate this with staff and customers.
  • Work with Outdoor Programs GAs and Professional staff on continuous program improvement.
  • Hold set weekly office hours.
  • Deep cleaning of all equipment throughout shifts worked and especially at specified designated cleaning times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications include:

  • Previous experience working at the Outing Center for at least one semester. 
  • Must maintain at least one Outing Center shift per week through the Fall 2020 semester.
  • Critical thinking skills including the ability to problem solve.
  • Task management skills including the ability to work efficiently without close supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills. 
  • Organization skills including a high attention to detail.
  • A high level of professionalism including the ability to provide discipline and constructive feedback to peers.

Condition of Employment:

  • Must help plan and facilitate Fall 2020 staff training(s) prior to Fall classes beginning.
  • Be available to work up to five days per week and have flexibility for morning, afternoon, and evening office hours. Specifically, must have availability Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, and either Thursday evenings or Friday mornings. These are our busiest times at the outing center, and the program assistant will need to be present.
  • Outdoor Programs staff should consider their position(s) with UREC as their first non-academic priority
  • Outing Center Staff must abide by all University Recreation policies and procedures on and off the clock.

Salary: $8.25 per hour
