Alpine Tower & High Ropes Facilitator

 

Title: Alpine Tower & High Ropes Facilitator
Reports To: Associate Director & Coordinator for Outdoor Programs
Hours: Based on Class Schedule. Minimum of 5 hours a week.

Position Summary: Facilitators provide challenging experiences at height which promote development in the areas of: self-efficacy, courage, flexibility, patience and trust between group members. Programs are objective-driven based on information received about the group’s goals when a group leader books the course. Facilitators are expected to connect the group experiences directly to the group objectives. Group size: 8-30. Time commitment: Typically 5 hours total including time before and after for prep and staff reflection. Routine cleaning and disinfecting procedures will be conducted regularly. 

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Able to lead at least one name game, one energizer, one piece of mind/body/spirit curriculum with confidence.
  • Supports the leadership of advanced facilitators.
  • Assists belayers in setting up the belay system.
  • Supervises belayers and back-up-belayers.
  • Manages risk by identifying and correcting problems with system set up and equipment.
  • May occasionally be asked to belay for a group member although preference is for participants to belay.
  • Familiar with clipboard forms and emergency procedures.
  • Deep cleaning of equipment throughout shifts worked and especially at designated cleaning times.

Facilitator Level I:

  • Able to lead an entire program progression including: welcome, explanation of expectations, framing the experience, icebreaker activity for a group of up to 30 participants, climbing experience for up to 8 participants and a 10-20 minute final group reflection/debrief.
  • Supports the leadership of advanced facilitators.
  • Knowledgeable of all opening and closing procedures.
  • Assists belayers in setting up the belay system.
  • Supervises belayers and back-up-belayers.
  • Manages risk by identifying and correcting problems with system set up and equipment.
  • May occasionally be asked to belay for a group member although preference is for participants to belay.
  • Familiar with clipboard forms and emergency procedures.
  • Demonstrated and reliable strength in necessary skills and attributes as defined above.

Facilitator Level II:

  • Meets the skills and abilities of the Facilitator Level I.
  • Able to confidently coordinate and direct staff team.
  • Able to make and communicate adjustments to the progression based on changing needs related to objectives, weather, staff abilities, medical considerations, etc.
  • Able to calmly and efficiently coordinate and perform technical rescues including: belay takeover, pick off rescue and coaching or physical assistance at height from an adjacent rope.

Required Qualifications and Expectations include:

  • Maintain current certifications in First Aid (or higher), CPR for the Professional Rescuer and NC Epinephrine Administration.
  • Attend 1-2 day kickoff staff training at the beginning of each semester facilitator plans to work.
  • Respond quickly to communication (phone, text, email).
  • Facilitators are expected to wear athletic clothing in good repair with closed toe/closed heel shoes.
  • Demonstrated responsiveness to verbal and written feedback.
  • Respond in emergency situation according to standard of care identified by required certifications.
  • Ability to effectively participate in a technical rescue.

Salary: $9.00 per hour
